Janis Commentz is known for her color-intense palette and loose brush strokes of figures and landscapes.  Commentz lives the Mojave Desert where she teaches classes and workshops for the Desert Institute in Joshua Tree. She has a B.A. from the University of Redlands and M.A. in Education - CSUSB.  Although Commentz grew up near the coast, she believes desert beauty is an acquired taste and enjoys plein air painting in the Southwest. She began drawing and painting early in life as the daughter of an artist. In 1977, she moved to the Mojave Desert  where she taught high school art and English until 2012. She has exhibited at Gallery 62, Joshua Tree Art Gallery, the Purple Agave, Rainbow Stew, 29 Palms Art Gallery, T.E. Studios - Riverside, and the Redlands Art Association. Commentz participated in the Hwy 62 Open Studio Art Tours (10 seasons), Joshua Tree National Park Juried Art Exposition (6 years), Joshua Tree National Park Spring Art Festival, Art Faire at CSUSB and Art For Heaven's Sake. Commentz served as Gallery Director for Gallery 62 during 2016.  She has been the featured artist at the Glass Outhouse Art Gallery and the 29 Palms. www.janiscommentz.com

Lesson Details & Fees: Beginning to Intermediate lessons vary from 2 hours in studio, all day workshops on location and 2 day workshops in studio/location. Workshops include drawing from a still life, the human figure and plein air painting. Topics include drawing and acrylic painting techniques including composition and color mixing, creating quick sketches, observation, using your phone/camera as a tool, and starting and developing your painting. Fees range from $20-$30 per hour. All day work shops -$75. Two day workshops $150.
