Lesson Details & Fees: Painting Techniques of the Old World Masters (Oil) Part 1) Grisaille; Part 2) Verdaccio; Part 3) alla Prima (direct painting). The classes are based on historical examples of oil painting as practiced by the old world masters. The emphasis is on optical and color theory, not just color mixing. By understanding how the Old Masters invented and perfected their techniques we learn more about what is possible in our own, contemporary paintings. I have turned 20 years of research and experimentation into a practical step -by- step guide to oil painting. My students have ranged in age from 14 (High School Freshmen) to 70+ (established artists and enthusiastic hobbyists.) We begin with the human figure and a limited palette; we also confront the idea of representation versus verisimilitude (photo-realism).
